In addition to changes to the Authorisation of Residency for Investment (ARI) or Golden Visa, proposed changes in the status of Portugal’s Nationality Law could also be having an impact.
“Portugal is a plan B for Americans who want not only financial diversification but also a new residence,” Sara Sousa Rebolo, of the Prime Legal law firm, told the weekly. “With these changes that the Government is planning to implement, there is a feeling of a race to a last opportunity,” she adds about the changes to the Nationality Law.
Expresso gives the example of the 3CC Portugal Golden Income fund managed by 3 Comma Capital which has seen investment shoot up from €1.2 million to €16.8 million between the end of last year and the first half of this year.
Up to 20% of the monies in the fund is invested in crypto currencies, between 10% and 30% in shares, and a minimum of 65% in company securities from companies based in Portugal, which means that it can be eligible for Golden Visa investors.
As of 2024 there were approximately 14,000 Americans living in Portugal, which equates to around 0.1% of the population and 1.4% of the total immigrant population.
