During a recent ceremony in Braga commemorating the 148th anniversary of the local PSP command, Carrilho highlighted the security strengths of the nation.

"Portugal is, thankfully, among the safest countries in the world, and Braga itself stands out as one of the most secure urban areas in the nation. This is not merely institutional rhetoric; it is a fact that deserves public recognition and protection,” he stated.

Moreover, Carrilho underscored the necessity of recruiting fresh talent, emphasizing the importance of attracting the best candidates, particularly women, to form a “more modern, more compassionate, and better-prepared” police force.

In Braga, Deputy Commander Sérgio Soares noted a concerning trend: a 40% expansion in the command's area of responsibility alongside a decline in the number of police officers per thousand residents and an aging workforce.

"Twenty-four years ago, there were 2.7 officers per thousand inhabitants; today, that number has decreased to 2.3, with the average officer's age now at 49," he remarked.

Despite these challenges, crime rates in the district have decreased. In 2024, overall crime reported within the jurisdiction of the PSP Braga Command dropped by 8.7% compared to 2023, translating to 578 fewer reported incidents.

Regarding violent or serious crimes, the PSP also recorded a 2.4% reduction, equating to six fewer cases.

Additionally, Soares mentioned ongoing investments to enhance police facilities, including renovations at the Vila Nova de Famalicão police station and potential improvements in Barcelos and Guimarães. The Braga command facilities' requalification is currently undergoing preliminary study.
