Silves – a pretty, small and historic Portuguese town

The inland town of Silves is located approx. 13km from the coastal village of CARVOEIRO and approx. 28km from MONCHIQUE in the north. Its historic background and major tourist attractions can be seen in one day – ideal to be combined with a visit to the town of Monchique up in the mountains.  Once the capital of the Algarve during the Moorish era (7-12th century) it is situated on a hill above the river Arade which was strategically an important port in ancient times. The panoramic views from the medieval castle on the hilltop are absolutely stunning. A walk from the castle, visiting the Cathedral next door down to the town, passing the old walled sections of Silves leads to the Cork museum which is now also a centre for cultural events and the municipal museums is highly recommended. Silves has a pretty square with gardens, palm trees, flowers and lots of cafes. The centre with its narrow cobbled streets offers lots of good restaurants and shops. From here it is only a short walk to the river and the Ponte Romana bridge which is also well known for its local restaurant. At the waterfront boats trips are offered to Portimao along the river. Silves is a charming, unhectic town, surrounded by rolling hills with lots of orange and lemon trees.

Real Estate Agency Togofor-Homes has 3 offices throughout the Algarve and can offer beautiful properties for sale in and around the parish of Silves.
